b. Boys loose confidence differently around the age of 5 when the concept of masculinity is introduced to them.

a. Holden is constantly trying to remain youthful, innocent, and free from the phonies of adult culture.

b. Holden has no real self confidence and at one point contemplates suicide. This is similar to how these kids loose their self confidence while growing up.
